Block paving cleaning in Malaga and along the Costa del Sol
We clean block paving on driveways, paths, steps and patios so the original colours come back, while protecting the joints that hold the paving together. Weeds, moss, dark staining and grime come out; the sand between the blocks is something we try hard to keep in.
Send us a photo and the m²Why does block paving go dark and patchy?
Block paving darkens because its surface is porous and its joints trap everything that lands on it. Dust, leaf litter, tyre rubber, spilled drinks and organic growth settle into the texture of each block and into the gaps between them.
Shaded and damp areas turn green or black first, which is why a single paved drive can look clean by the gate and grimy by the house. Light-coloured blocks show it most; red and charcoal blocks lose their depth and turn a flat grey.

How is block paving pressure washed without emptying the joints?
Block paving is pressure washed with the jet at a low angle, working along the joint lines rather than straight into them, at a pressure and distance that cleans the block faces without blasting the sand out.
Some jointing material always comes out, especially where weeds and moss had taken root, because the roots and the sand they held are removed together. Joints that were already loose before the clean will show it afterwards.

After the clean we look at the joints and the blocks. If joints are open or blocks rock underfoot, we tell you, and refilling or minor repairs can be planned as a separate stage. Our guide on cleaning block paving properly explains why this step matters for how long the paving stays tidy.
Which block paving problems can cleaning solve?
Cleaning solves problems that sit on the surface or in the top of the joints; it does not fix movement in the base underneath.
| Problem | Does cleaning help? |
|---|---|
| Grey, dull, grimy blocks | Yes, colours usually come back clearly |
| Weeds and moss in the joints | Yes, removed; seeds may settle again later |
| Black spots and algae in shade | Yes, in most cases |
| Oil drips under parked cars | Partly; see our oil stain service |
| Rust marks from furniture or irrigation | Needs targeted treatment, see our rust page |
| Sunken areas, ruts or rocking blocks | No, the base needs attention first |
For the harder marks, see oil stain removal and rust, mould and moss. Sunken or rocking paving is a job for a paving contractor, and we will tell you if that is what we see.
Which kinds of block paving do we clean?
We clean the concrete block paving found on villas and developments along the coast, in all the usual shapes and colour mixes.
- Rectangular blocks in herringbone or stretcher patterns on driveways.
- Wave-shaped and interlocking pavers on paths and courtyards.
- Mixed-colour layouts with darker accent blocks or borders.
- Stepped paths up to the house, where moss collects on the risers.
- Natural stone setts and slabs laid next to block paving.

Each layout drains differently, and patterns with many short joints, such as herringbone, need more attention to keep the sand in place.
What does stained block paving look like before and after?
Stained block paving usually looks uniformly grey or brownish before cleaning, with the pattern and the colour mix barely visible. After a careful clean, the individual blocks, the borders and the accent colours stand out again.

The change is often biggest on paths and stepped walkways, where moss on the risers and edges disappears and the steps become easier to see. On long drives, the difference between the shaded and the sunny stretch evens out.

What cleaning does not change is a colour that has bleached out of the blocks themselves. If the blocks are pale after washing, they are faded rather than dirty, and that is the point where a recolour becomes worth discussing.
Should you seal or paint block paving after cleaning?
Sealing or painting after cleaning is optional, and it only makes sense once the blocks and joints are clean, dry and sound. Clean block paving that still has good colour often looks right without anything else.
If the blocks have faded badly, a recolour is possible: we clean, deal with open joints and damaged edges, cut in along walls and borders, and apply two coats of synthetic resin paint. Our sister site on painting block paving covers that option in detail.
The decision is mostly about appearance and maintenance. The article on cleaning versus recolouring sets out the questions to ask before choosing.
How do you get a block paving cleaning quote?
Send a wide photo of each paved area, close-ups of the joints and the worst stains, and the approximate square metres. Mention steps, slopes and how we reach the area, and whether there is water on site.
Price depends on the area, the amount of growth in the joints, the layout and access. Orientative figures are on the partner page for pressure washing cost.
If you are not on the coast, your key holder or gardener can take the photos for you. Ask them to include the edges of the paving next to lawns and beds, because that is where weeds and moss tend to be heaviest and where the joints need the most care during cleaning.
Frequently asked questions
Do you clean block paving in Marbella and Nueva Andalucía?
Yes. We are based in Marbella and clean block-paved drives, paths and terraces in Nueva Andalucía, Sierra Blanca, Nagüeles, Elviria, Las Chapas and the rest of the municipality. For gated developments we arrange access through your administrator or security team.
Do you clean block paving in Estepona, Fuengirola and the Axarquía?
Yes. We cover the coast from Manilva and Casares through Estepona, Fuengirola, Benalmádena and Málaga to the Axarquía, as well as inland towns. Send your location with the photos and we confirm when we can come. Inland villages with narrow access may need a little more planning.
Will jet washing loosen my paving blocks?
Jet washing done at the right angle does not loosen blocks that are firmly bedded. If blocks were already loose, cleaning removes the dirt and sand that were holding them visually in place, so the problem becomes obvious. We point out any blocks that move.
Do I need to refill the joints after cleaning?
Often some refilling helps, because a little jointing material always comes out, especially where weeds were growing. Whether it is needed depends on how much was lost. We look at the joints after the clean and tell you. Refilling, if needed, is quoted as a separate item.
Will the weeds come back?
Weeds come back when seeds land in open, damp joints. Cleaning removes what is there but does not change that. Well-filled joints leave less room for seeds, which is one reason we pay attention to the joints after cleaning.
Can you clean block paving that has been painted?
Yes, but the old paint will react to the wash. Loose paint will lift, and firmly bonded paint will mostly stay. If you want to keep the colour, we use gentler settings; if you want it gone, see our old paint removal service.
Do you clean stone setts and natural stone paths?
Yes. Natural stone setts, slabs and walls next to paved areas can be cleaned, usually with gentler settings because some stone is softer than concrete blocks. Send a photo so we can see the type of stone. Mixed stone and block areas are cleaned together.
Can you remove white marks from new block paving?
White deposits on paving can have several causes, including efflorescence from within the blocks. Some lift with cleaning and some return for a while. A close-up photo helps us judge, and we will be honest if cleaning is not the right answer.
Can my driveway be used straight after cleaning?
A cleaned surface can usually be walked on once it is safe to do so. If joints have been refilled or a coating applied, wait as advised for that material per the product data sheet. We confirm on the day what applies to your job.
What do I need to move before you clean block paving?
Move cars, pots, furniture, mats and anything stored on the paving. Let us know about low-level lighting, irrigation heads and delicate planting along the edges so we can work around them carefully. If you are away, your key holder can prepare the area for us before the agreed day.
