How professional pressure washing works on driveways, patios and paving

Professional pressure washing is a sequence, not a single blast of water: assess the surface, test a small patch, clean in a controlled pattern, treat stubborn stains, rinse, then inspect what the clean surface reveals. Each stage exists to get a clean, even result without damaging the material.

What happens before the machine is switched on?

Before any water is used, the surface is identified and its condition checked. Imprinted concrete, plain concrete, block paving and natural stone each tolerate different treatment, and a coated or sealed surface behaves differently from a bare one.

  • What material it is and whether it has been sealed or painted before.
  • What the soiling is: grime, growth, oil, rust, failing coating or a mix.
  • Where the water will drain, and what lies downhill: drains, a pool, planting, a neighbour's plot.
  • What is fragile: low lighting, irrigation heads, door thresholds, render at the base of walls.
  • How the site is reached and where water comes from.

Most of this can be seen in good photos, which is why we quote from pictures first and check the rest on site. Our page on patio and driveway cleaning lists what a standard clean includes.

Why is a test patch done first?

A test patch is done first because it shows, in a small and discreet area, how the surface reacts to a given pressure, nozzle and distance before the whole area is committed.

On imprinted concrete, a test tells you whether the remaining sealer holds or lifts. On block paving, it shows how much jointing sand moves. On older plain concrete, it reveals whether the top layer is sound or starts to erode.

If the test shows a weak surface, the right answer is to change approach or stop and discuss repairs, not to continue and hope for the best.

How is a surface cleaned evenly without stripes?

An even result comes from working in a consistent pattern, at a steady distance, with overlapping passes, and from cleaning complete areas rather than random patches.

Uneven work leaves visible wand marks and stripes, especially on plain concrete and light paving. Starting in the middle of a surface and stopping halfway also leaves a line between washed and unwashed areas, which is why natural breaks such as steps, borders and changes of material are used as start and end points.

On slopes and ramps, cleaning usually runs from the top down so dirty water does not flow back over clean areas.

When is water not enough?

Water is not enough when the stain sits inside the pores or is chemically bonded to the surface, as with oil, rust and some deep organic marks. These need a targeted treatment before or during the wash.

Targeted treatments are agreed with the owner in advance, chosen for the surface and its surroundings. For oil in particular, see oil stain removal and the companion guide on which oil stains come out of concrete.

How is block paving handled differently?

Block paving is cleaned at a lower angle and along the joints, because the sand between the blocks is part of what holds the paving together. A jet aimed straight into the joints empties them.

Some jointing material and the weeds rooted in it always come out. After cleaning, the joints are inspected; where they are open, refilling can be planned as a repair. Our block paving cleaning service and the guide on cleaning block paving properly explain this in more detail.

What should an owner prepare before the cleaning day?

The owner's main job is to clear the area and to tell the cleaner about anything that is not obvious from photos. A clear surface lets the work follow a steady pattern without stopping.

  • Move vehicles, furniture, pots, mats, toys and bins off the area.
  • Point out ground-level lights, sockets, irrigation heads and delicate planting.
  • Close windows and doors near the work, since spray and fine debris travel.
  • Tell neighbours if their wall, car or plot is close to the area being cleaned.
  • If you are abroad, agree with your key holder who opens the gate and when.

These small steps make a visible difference to the finish, because every object left on the surface creates a spot that has to be cleaned separately and may end up looking different from the rest.

What happens after the clean?

After the clean, the surface is rinsed, residues are dealt with, and the surface is inspected in its true condition for the first time in a long while.

That inspection often brings up cracks, small holes, chipped edges, open joints or faded colour that were hidden under dirt. Some owners stop there and enjoy a clean surface. Others use the moment to plan crack repair, edge cut-in and two coats of synthetic resin paint.

If you are deciding between those two routes, the article on cleaning versus recolouring is the next thing to read. And if paint flakes or oily water are involved, the guide on wash water and residues explains what the regulations we have checked say.

Frequently asked questions

Is higher pressure always better?

No. Higher pressure cleans faster on hard, sound surfaces, but it can scar soft stone, erode old concrete, strip sealer and empty block paving joints. The right pressure is the lowest one that cleans the surface properly, found with a test patch.

Why do some cleaned driveways look stripy?

Stripes come from inconsistent distance, speed or overlap of the passes, or from stopping and restarting in the middle of a surface. A steady pattern and cleaning whole areas to a natural break avoids them. Light surfaces such as pale paving show uneven passes most clearly.

Do you always use a cleaning product?

No. Many surfaces only need water. Targeted treatments are used for specific problems such as oil, rust or heavy growth, and are agreed with you in advance. We do not recommend products by name. Where a treatment is used, it is chosen for the surface, the stain and what lies nearby.

Can pressure washing remove colour from imprinted concrete?

It can remove loose sealer and surface colour that is already failing. If the colour is sound, careful cleaning should leave it in place. If it is not, the clean makes the fading visible, and a recolour becomes the option to consider.

How long does a professional clean take?

It depends on the area, the type of soiling, the material and access. We do not give a standard duration; we estimate it for your particular job once we have seen photos and the square metres. Stain treatment and residue collection add to the time on site.

Why do you need to know where the water drains?

Wash water carries dirt, organic matter and sometimes oil or paint flakes. Knowing where it drains lets us protect the pool, planting and drains, and plan how residues are handled in line with local rules. It also tells us whether runoff could reach a neighbour's land.

Can you clean a surface in direct midday sun?

Cleaning itself can take place in sun, but some targeted treatments behave differently on hot surfaces, so timing is chosen to suit them. Product instructions decide that, and we plan the day accordingly. In summer we often start early, which is also more comfortable for anyone living in the house.

Is the surface slippery while it is wet?

Wet surfaces can be slippery, especially smooth stone and areas with remaining growth. During the work the area should be kept clear of people and pets until it is safe to walk on. Steps and ramps need particular care until they have dried.

What if the test patch shows damage?

Then we stop and change the approach, or we discuss with you whether the surface needs repair before cleaning goes further. Continuing on a surface that is clearly weakening would only make the problem bigger. We also show you photos of the test area so you can see the reason for the change.

Does pressure washing seal or protect the surface?

No. Pressure washing only cleans. Protection comes from a sealer or a coating, which is a separate step chosen according to the surface and the product data sheet. Our main renovation coating is two coats of synthetic resin paint. Cleaning is simply the stage that makes that protection possible.
